The longest night of the year · 23–24 June 2026

Once a year Porto throws the warmest, loudest, most joyful street party in Portugal. Grilled sardines on every corner, plastic hammers, music until dawn and fireworks over the Douro at midnight. Here is everything you need to enjoy it — and the practical bits to plan around.

The night, in short

A city-wide celebration.

The party spreads across the whole city, anchored by three main stages — Largo do Amor de Perdição (Cordoaria), Praça da Casa da Música and Avenida dos Aliados — with the grand fireworks at midnight over the river.

Eat Grilled sardines & caldo verde The smell of charcoal-grilled sardines, broa bread and green-cabbage soup fills every street. Bring cash for the stalls.
Tradition Plastic hammers & leeks A gentle bonk on the head with a squeaky plastic hammer (or a flowering leek) brings good luck. Everyone is fair game — join in.
Tradition Manjerico & love notes Little pots of sweet basil with a paper-flag poem — the classic São João gift. Don't touch the leaves; brush the top and smell your fingers.
Midnight Fireworks over the Douro At 00:00 the river erupts in colour between Porto and Gaia. Sky lanterns drift up from the hills through the small hours.

Where to watch the fireworks.

The display rises over the Douro between the Ribeira and Vila Nova de Gaia. Arrive early — the best riverside spots fill up well before midnight.

Riverside · classic

Cais da Ribeira

Front-row on the Porto bank, in the heart of the UNESCO quarter. Atmospheric and very busy — come hours ahead.

Across the river

Cais de Gaia & Jardim do Morro

The widest panorama of the whole display and the city behind it. Jardim do Morro is reached on foot over the bridge or by Metro (Line D).

Elevated & quieter

Jardim & Miradouro das Fontainhas

A calmer balcony over the river, east of the crowds — wonderful if you're staying nearby.

Ponte Luís I

Closed to traffic and given over to pedestrians for the night — a spectacular vantage point right above the water.

Getting around

Road & parking closures.

For the celebration, large parts of central Porto close to traffic and parking from the afternoon of the 23rd until the morning of the 24th. If you have a car, move it early and plan to explore on foot.

  • 23 Jun, 19:00 → 24 Jun, 08:00
    Ponte Luís I closed to all traffic — pedestrians only. The Metro (Line D) keeps running across the upper deck.
  • 23 Jun, 20:00 → 24 Jun, 03:00
    Baixa, Ribeira & Aliados core — a large delimited zone around the Casa da Música and Aliados stages closes to traffic (Aliados, Almada, Sá da Bandeira, Mouzinho da Silveira, Infante D. Henrique, Ribeira, and many more), except public transport where safe.
  • 23 Jun, 17:00 → 24 Jun, 08:00
    Streets near the stages close, including parts of Rua do Bonjardim, Rua da Alegria, Rua do Bolhão, Guedes de Azevedo, Camões and Fernandes Tomás.
  • 23 Jun, 20:00 → 24 Jun, 08:00
    Casa da Música area (Boavista) — Rua de Júlio Dinis, D. Manuel II, Cordoaria and surrounding streets close around the stage.
  • 23 Jun, 08:00 → 24 Jun, 06:00
    No stopping or parking on Rua de São João, Rua do Infante D. Henrique (Ribeira) and Mouzinho da Silveira — to clear bus corridors.
